About who?

The Darren Levine Story

People that know me well know that i don't like to talk about myself tooo much, so to make an about me page isn't my favorite thing to do. But how else would you learn about me over the internet?

Well if you've browsed around you've likely concluded that i make videos, or as i like to call it, i'm the guy who presses the record button. My video days started off rather odd, back in highschool i was asked by my peers to make videos of their backyard wrestling. From there i started using videos for school projects. Keep in mind non linear editors were still rather crude back then, and computers weren't the fastest.

From there it was all sideways, though i didn't decide until my second year in college that filmmaking was to be my thing. Having already dabbled in video, and with a fairly decent background in photography, i went into film school with an apparent edge on most other students. Rather soon i wondered what i was actually learning, though i did learn things, it was obvious the whole picture wasn't being painted.

I think it's because filmmaking is always evolving, and digital has made it very technical, even more so than it was. I've always been at least as technical as i've been artistic, and always kept up with trends, new gizmos and tech, and read all the relavent magazines. Plus, if i didn't know something, i would look it up, figure it out. Film school just focused on the traditional filmmaking methods using film, not digital, and we were heading into a digital world.

So since it was decided by me that i would go nowhere near a desk job, i opened a small studio with the intent on doing video services and teaching people filmmaking & digital video. I always get a kick when students ask how do i know all this, and my response is always the same: Not from film school :)

Always in and out of small shoots, teaching the occassional student, i think wanted something new. It was then i thought to create a new film festvail, because like film school, i thought something new was needed. After completing the first year of the festival, the most common comment from people was that they thought the festival had been around at least a couple of years. That was great to hear on top of people overall liking the festival, so now i'm working to make the next iteration that much better.

Other than that i'm always looking around for the next interest. One of my bigger goals for 2010 is to publish the book that i am writing, and you guessed it, it's a guide to filmmaking.
