Wow, it’s not even april and NY reached high 70s!
Back on track…. Submission are rolling in and our judges are hard at work giving each a careful eye. Looks like people are LOVING the Zero Risk Free Submission option!
One thing I forgot to share was the Lagunitas product placement contract for our last season’s filmmakers! For those of you who don’t know, we chatted with the brewing company and they loved the idea that we posed: to give ALL of the accepted filmmakers from last year, a 2 film deal; to use any of their products in their films, without any worry of having to hide the labels! The contract has all of the filmmaker’s listed, and the details and signature of the company for the permission to use their products. Those of you who were featured last year only need to contact us to get your copy of the contract and start using it!
Enjoy the weather, Enjoy the Free submissions, and Enjoy the free product placement!

Festival Director

Get ready for our THIRD year! And this time we’ve revamped the whole submission process to make it easier than ever!
Congratulations to last year’s winners who took home prizes such as aerial camera time and adobe CS5!
Also new this year: Submit your film for FREE with the Zero Risk submission option. (limit 2, see site for details!)
You also have the ability to link us to your film instead of mailing a DVD, using any online service such as Youtube, Vimeo, etc… (we recommend one with password protection)
That’s right! Free submission and no form printing and no disc mailing! We think you’ll like this new system!
As always we are looking for ways to improve the festival, and this is one big step!

We cleared our 2nd annual festival with a bash, despite that darned hurricane!
Now we’ve spent some time revamping the way submissions work, done are the days of printing and mailing! It’s as simple as filling out a contact form, and to make it easier yet, you can now send a LINK instead of a DVD! Now, we assume you haven’t released your film online yet, so we recommend using a service which uses passwords to protect your film, we prefer Vimeo. They are free up to 500mb for a single video, which should be plenty for you short film submitters. For those submitting a feature, you can still send in a DVD, or you can spend the few bucks for Vimeo plus to get a practically unlimited size limit(5gb)
We look forward to your latest films!

After extensive searching we are pretty locked in on a great venue, with more space for networking than last year!
Don’t forget to get your film in, because if you don’t submit, your chances are zero!

Take advantage of HALF OFF submission fees for a limited time during the earlier submitter season.
This past year’s festival went better than expected and we are looking to grow it into an even bigger and more useful event!
Submission fees are only $23 and under for a limited time, Although early submissions does not imply an advantage over regular season submissions, if your film receives high enough marks we will have you as an early acceptance. We will announce as many as 3 but as few as 1 early acceptance and promote your film on the website and in our press releases.

As a first year festival, the one relief is that the expectations from the seasoned festival goers is typically low. When asked what the usual turnout for smaller festival is for a showing, a colleague of mine gave an instant reply of “10” and then a hard chuckle. I am very happy to say that none of our showings had that few, and our biggest showing on Saturday night had over 120 viewers. If you were to ask me what my main goal with this festival was, it would be to have proper audiences for all the filmmakers. Audiences: Check.
It was also a joy to have a casting agent from one of the films side up to me and ask to be put in contact with the lead actress in one of the films. I hear there were numerous instances like this going on during the festival and it really makes me happy to hear the the filmmakers are gaining use from each other. Networking: Check.
And finally, we of course had many comments, landslidingly good at that. But the most common comment, which I was not expecting, was that people were confused…. they could have sworn we must have been around for at least 3-4 years. They were amazed that we were a first year festival. To be able to convey an image of a 3-4 year seasoned festival in just the first year is an achievement I am ecstatic to have accomplished. Credibility: Check.
So then the big question everyone has been asking: What about next year? I love this question, because it’s a storage facility full of possibilities. I was able to achieve many things that I wanted to with this first year, but I had many more things I wanted to do which were limited by our budget. But now, armed with our credibility, we already have talks going on with financial sponsors for next year to make this festival truly a top tier tool for the independent filmmakers.
Keep filming, my friends,
Festival Director, Darren Levine

I just realized that we have a lot of work to do, that’s right, we do. But it’s our own fault, because we are hell bent on making this just a ridiculously great festival. You will see some new additions to our about us page very soon, we have a lot of partners and supporters to add.
For one, we have officially decided which charity we wish to donate a portion of all profits from the festival to. Then there are the industry partners who have shown their support in getting the word out about our festival. Look for these and more in the next few days on http://www.FilmFestNY.com !

Pay a visit to The Scandinavia House on Park Avenue between 37th and 38th Streets. It’s a lovely spot with a cafe that serves up some delicious bits
You may not be able to get inside the screening room, but pick up one of their booklets to see all the events they have coming up!
